last minute ideas for valentine's day πŸ’

I'll be honest with y'all, I have never been a fan of Valentine's Day. It seems like such an artificial holiday to me. And people (men, mostly) run around like chickens with their heads cut off on the afternoon of Valentine's Day hoping to find just the right gift to say, "I love you."

And then people (women, mostly) get their feelings hurt if their significant other doesn't adequately express their love on Valentine's Day. The whole thing has always seemed a little silly to me.

How about expressing your love in some way every single day?

  • Say "I love you" every single day
  • Make the coffee
  • Pick your s**t up off the floor
  • Wash the dishes
  • Bring home flowers just because
  • Leave work early to show up for your kids
  • Surprise your wife/husband with going out to dinner on a random Wednesday
  • Fill the car with gas
  • Cook something special
  • Book a massage
  • Give a massage
  • Listen...without solving
  • Do the thing that they've been asking that you've procrastinated

There are a thousand ways to show you love someone, and none of them require going to the store and picking up a card with a sentiment that someone else wrote, or spending hundreds of dollars on the perfect gift.

But, that's just me. I know lots of you celebrate Valentine's Day and that's ok too. Each to his own! And just in case you need a last minute gift, I've put together a board of some of the best finds on Amazon.

Food is my love language, so I enjoy cooking things that I know my people love to eat. Here are some of my favorite things to cook to show someone I care about that I'm thinking of them.

Valentine's Breakfast Charcuterie

So, I'm not a complete curmudgeon on this topic. I do like to do something special when the grandkids are here, and this year it works out that I'll have a handful of them here for breakfast on Valentine's Day.

Easy Cocoa Brownies

I could eat the whole pan. They are moist, chewy, fudgy, and everything that a brownie should be.

Homemade Banana Pudding

My family loves this banana pudding recipe. The custard comes from Edna Lewis and Scott Peacock and is one of the best things I've ever eaten.

Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits

This is not a typical treat or something you'd think of for Valentine's Day, but homemade biscuits are special in my family. We like them with country ham.

Chocolate Chip Cheesecake

My kids all love this cheesecake and it's so easy. No springform pan needed!

Chocolate Chip Muffins

The grandkids call these "Lulu Muffins" and they request them all the time. I like to make them in mini muffin pans.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Are you sensing a theme here? We do love some chocolate! These cookies are THE BEST chocolate chip cookies. They even won first prize in a 4-H contest and it just doesn't get better than that.

If you make any of these recipes, please snap a photo and tag me on Instagram @southernfoodandfun. I'd love to know what you're making!

Are you celebrating Valentine's Day? If so, I'd love to know about it! What's your plan?

Have a great time!
